international volunteering Connect with us An Australian Government initiative
Your skills are needed!
Your technical skills and unique experiences can make a significant contribution to addressing development challenges in countries across the Indo-Pacific region. International volunteering gives you an opportunity to contribute meaningfully by supporting local organisations to achieve their development goals.
But you will probably find, as many of our volunteers do, that you gain just as much or even more than you contribute!
New experiences, friendships and skills
Personal and professional growth are important aspects of the volunteer experience. We foster a culture of learning and reflection through formal training, briefings, and monitoring and evaluation activities throughout your assignment. Volunteering can also be a great way to boost your career.
On assignment, you will learn about your new country, colleagues and culture. Along with language skills that you might gain, these experiences will give you a deeper understanding of how to work across cultures.
What volunteers say
People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities have told us why they became international volunteers:
~ to be involved in meaningful work
~ to experience different cultures, languages, challenges and perspectives
~ to get out of my comfort zone
~ to share specialist knowledge and technical skills where they are needed
~ to gain experience working internationally
Become a remote volunteer
While we have temporarily suspended sending Australian volunteers overseas due to the impact of COVID-19, we continue to support partner organisations through remote volunteering. If you're interested in volunteering in-country, sign up to the Assignment Alert or register for the Talent Pool for the latest updates.
How we support volunteers
Travel to in-country assignments The Australian Volunteers Program covers return flights from Australia and appropriate visas for volunteers and approved accompanying dependents. |
Learning and development Volunteer assignments provide opportunities for growth and can be challenging. To transition into life as a volunteer and develop new skills and capabilities, remote and in-country volunteers participate in a pre-assignment briefing, in-country orientation, and language training. |
In-country health care and cover Volunteer health and well-being is a priority. In-country volunteers receive medical assessments and vaccinations, have access to 24 hour emergency support, are covered by comprehensive insurance, and can access confidential counselling. |
In-country safety and security Volunteer safety and security is of utmost importance. In-country volunteers receive comprehensive security information, develop their own Security Plan and have access to 24-hour emergency support. |
Allowances for remote and in-country volunteers Remote volunteers are eligible for a modest remote volunteer allowance to cover the anticipated costs associated with remote volunteering. In-country volunteers are eligible for a modest accommodation and living allowance to maintain safe and secure accommodation and cover food, daily commute, communication, and other local costs. |
| Partners and children for in-country volunteers In-country volunteering can be a family affair. On longer in-country assignments, approved partners and children may be supported to accompany you. We’re committed to ensuring that international volunteering is inclusive and accessible to Australians from a range of backgrounds, with diverse perspectives, identities and abilities. If you have skills to share and are an Australian citizen or permanent resident over the age of 18, you can apply for an assignment. Australian volunteers work in a range of sectors, including business services, community and social development, health, science, engineering and architecture, skilled trades, education and training, and media and arts. There can be barriers, perceived or otherwise, that prevent some Australians from participating fully in international volunteering, particularly people with a disability, Indigenous Australians, people living in regional and remote areas, and people from the LGBTQI+ community. We are passionate about supporting all Australians to volunteer. We recognise the unique strengths and skills that people with diverse backgrounds and experiences offer, and we work with volunteers to remove barriers they may face.
